Celebrating a children's birthday party at home: ideas, planning & tips

In brief

Plan the perfect children's birthday party at home!

Many parents underestimate how well a children's birthday party at home can work - sometimes even better than in a rented location. You save a lot of money, keep control of the event and the little ones are much more relaxed in their familiar surroundings. If you prepare a little, you can have an uncomplicated yet really nice party.

Why celebrate at home?

The weather doesn't matter

Winter child? April weather? It doesn't matter. If you're partying indoors, you don't have to constantly check the weather forecast or come up with an alternative plan. The party is happening - period. That alone takes a lot of pressure off the preparations.

Much cheaper and more practical

Anyone who has ever rented a party room knows: it's expensive. At home, there are no rental costs and no annoying lugging back and forth of decorations, crockery and food. Even better: you can set up days in advance instead of frantically putting everything together on the morning of the party.

This has an additional benefit for younger children in particular: young children feel more comfortable in familiar surroundings and don't get overstimulated so quickly.

Design the way you like it

At home, you are in charge of the decorations, music, program and food. Elaborate theme with matching costumes? Sure. A simple celebration with cake and games in the living room? Just as good. Your home becomes the stage for exactly the birthday your child imagines.

Planning a children's birthday party at home

1. choose a theme and get decorations

A coherent theme pulls the whole party together. It's best to let your child help decide - here are a few classics and newer ideas:

  • Pirates - draw a treasure map, hand out eye patches, gold coins as table decorations
  • Unicorn** - Pink and purple balloons, glitter everywhere, unicorn hair ribbons
  • Princess/knight** - make crowns and swords, castle backdrop from moving boxes
  • Jungle/Safari** - plastic animals, leaf garlands, animal cupcakes
  • Indoor picnic - spread out plaid blankets, picnic baskets, serve finger food
  • Space** - planets made of papier-mâché, stars on the ceiling, rocket snacks

The decorations don't have to cost a fortune: a few colorful plates, balloons, a garland and two or three details to match the theme are all you need.

2. put together the guest list

Be realistic about how many children can actually fit in your rooms and what you want to spend. A tried and tested rule of thumb: As many guests as the child will be old - so five friends for a fifth birthday.

Also consider whether the parents will stay. This usually makes sense for children under five, but a drop-off and pick-up solution is usually sufficient for schoolchildren.

3. send out invitations

The invitation sets the tone. Via Invitivo you can put together a nice digital invitation in a few minutes - including design, all information and automatic feedback management.

**What does a digital invitation actually do?

  • Guests accept or decline directly via the link
  • You can see immediately who is attending and who has yet to reply
  • You can include additional questions (allergies, when to pick up, is an accompanying person coming)
  • If the time or address changes, you update once - everyone sees it

Tip: Send the link as an individual WhatsApp message to each family, not in a group. It feels more personal and the replies don't disappear in the chat history.

4. organize catering

Birthday cake is of course part of it - but uncomplicated food is also fine:

  • pizza (homemade or from a delivery service)
  • Sausages in puff pastry**
  • Fruit skewers and raw vegetable sticks with dip**
  • popcorn and pretzel sticks

For dessert, muffins, a small snack bar or an ice cream station always go down well. If you want to be on the safe side because of allergies: ask about intolerances using the additional questions in your Invitivo invitation - then you'll be prepared.

Indoor games and activities

5. handicrafts

Handicrafts are an excellent fixed item on the program - and the children can take a souvenir home with them:

  • Smaller children: Design crowns, paint wooden figures, put together sticky pictures
  • Larger children: Make friendship bracelets, print fabric bags, make beaded jewelry
  • To eat:** Decorate cookies, decorate muffins or make your own pizza toppings

Tip: Put disposable tablecloths underneath - then you can concentrate on the fun instead of thinking about splashes of color.

6. games

Without movement games, a pack of children can quickly become restless:

  • Stop dancing - Goes with any age group, all you need is a jukebox
  • Pot-kicking - An evergreen that has been popular for generations
  • Treasure Hunt - Hide clues all over the house
  • Journey to Jerusalem - Set up chairs in a circle, music on and off
  • Who am I? - Stick a piece of paper on your forehead and start guessing

For schoolchildren and older children: Karaoke, a quiz with buzzer or a scavenger hunt with tricky tasks.

7. home cinema or photo corner

When a quieter phase is needed in between:

  • Cinema: Beamer or large screen, spread cushions and blankets on the floor, fill small bags with popcorn - cinema feeling without tickets
  • Photo corner: Hang up a background to match the theme, provide funny accessories (hats, sunglasses, slogan signs) and let the children snap away.

Afterwards, the photos can be easily shared with all parents using the broadcast function in Invitivo.

8th sleepover party

A sleepover is the absolute highlight for children aged seven and over:

  • Bake pizza or fill tacos together
  • Movie night with a vote on the movie
  • Dig out board and card games
  • Scary stories or bedtime stories at the end

For the younger ones: A "pajama party without an overnight stay" - everyone shows up in their pajamas, there's popcorn and a movie, but everyone picks up before bedtime.

Tips for a stress-free party

9. start early enough

Use the home advantage: hang up decorations the evening before, prepare snacks, portion out craft materials. What's already in place doesn't have to be done on the day of the party - and you'll be noticeably more relaxed.

10. stay relaxed

Children want to run around, laugh and have fun - not a stylish Instagram backdrop. Balloons, something good to eat and a few fun games add up to a really great day. Ditch the perfectionism and just join in the celebrations.

Frequently asked questions

How do I keep the costs down?

Celebrate at home instead of booking a location, limit the number of guests, make your own decorations, use digital invitations instead of printed cards and use your own games. This will keep the birthday affordable for your wallet.

Is this also possible in a small apartment?

Absolutely. Invite fewer guests, move some furniture aside for a short time and divide the activities into different rooms (eating in the kitchen, crafting in the living room, playing in the children's room). It works better than you might think.

What's the best way to send the invitations?

The easiest way is via a digital invitation with Invitivo. You create an appealing design, share the link via WhatsApp and have all acceptances and rejections collected in one place - without the chaos of notes and endless follow-up in the group chat.

How do I remind parents of the feedback?

With Invitivo, you can see straight away who has not yet replied. Write these parents a short message after about a week:

"Hi [name]! Quick reminder: [child]s birthday is on [date] - can [guest name] come? Here's the link again: [link]"

From what age can children celebrate without parents?

This varies from child to child, but experience has shown that from around 5-6 years of age it works quite well without parental supervision. Use the additional questions in the invitation to get the parents' cell phone numbers - then you can reach them immediately in an emergency.
